These chemicals, which may be carcinogenic, mutagenic, or toxic for reproduction, pose significant risks not only to individual well-being but also to ecological systems.

Scan4Chem offers a practical tool for consumers to investigate the presence of SVHCs in an array of products, including toys, sports equipment, furniture, electrical appliances, and clothing. By simply scanning the barcode of a product, users can access valuable information regarding hazardous substances it may contain.

This function empowers consumers to make informed choices, potentially avoiding products that include harmful chemicals. Additionally, by requesting this information, users communicate to companies the importance of reducing the presence of such substances in their offerings. It is important to note that legislation permits this right to request information, and consumers are encouraged to utilize it.

The platform also allows product suppliers to submit their data into a dedicated database linked with the app. Consequently, users can access up-to-date information at any time. If a product's details are not found in the database, the app facilitates the generation and submission of inquiries on behalf of users. An increase in consumer requests can prompt suppliers to enhance their database entries, thereby contributing to continual improvement of the app’s efficacy.

Currently, Scan4Chem operates across 18 European countries and plans to expand its reach throughout Europe, underscoring the growing demand for transparency in consumer products.

In accordance with the European Union's REACH regulation, there is a legal entitlement for consumers to seek information about SVHCs present in products. Suppliers are required to disclose any such substances present at concentrations exceeding 0.1% by weight. It is important to clarify that suppliers are solely responsible for the accuracy and timeliness of their responses.

This right to information pertains primarily to articles—most products and packaging—while food and certain items like cosmetics and cleaning agents fall under different regulations. Notably, if a product consists of multiple components (for example, a bicycle), suppliers are expected to provide comprehensive information on each part involved.
